Terrace Talks : Jenny

Hi Jenny! Tell us a little about yourself:
“I am 28 years old, I live and work downtown and I love being in Macon! It’s a big town, small city and I’m from a very small town originally, and I learned that small town’s just aren’t for me. I lived in Atlanta for a bit and also realized that the big city wasn’t for me either, so Downtown Macon has been a good choice. I am recently engaged to a great guy and we have an awesome little cat named Tobi! She is my best little furry friend!

What made you decide to be a hair stylist?
“As a kid, I used to play with my mom’s hair and then as I got older, I played around with my own hair style to really showcase who I was and to be artistic. A lot of my friends in high school told me I should really consider going to Cosmetology School so I did and I fell in love with it! I first starting working in Atlanta after graduating, but realized that that wasn’t the place for me. So I came to Macon and eventually found Signature, and that was a great fit and I love it.”

What do you love about this industry?
“I discovered a lot of artistic vision and artists in the hair industry before I ever even started and that’s what really drew me to being a hair stylist. I am inspired by a lot of the 60s trends, mod styles, I love Vidal Sassoon. He is my hair hero to this day. Technically, I love cutting and design, because it takes a certain eye and a certain skill, and it takes time. I like that I have had the patience and time to work on it and to develop those skills and get better and better. Some of my current inspiration definitely comes from watching stylists like Anh Co Tran and Tara Gardiner.”

What’s your favorite trend in hair right now?
“I love anything with a retro vibe to it. I am seeing a lot of 70s throwback styles on the runways this year that I’m really into. I love anything that has a mod vibe to it as well: bobs, bangs, rock n roll, hippie chic.”

Tell us a little bit about your Signature life:
“When I first got here, I wasn’t sure how I would fit in, but everybody was super sweet, super welcoming, and they embraced me for who I am! They love that I am a little rock-n-roll so I like that about this group. I love that everyone has their own personality and we all embrace each other for who we are because that just makes the team work better! You know, we all have our differences but we all know how to work on our strengths together. I love that about Signature. Being at our new Downtown Location on Cherry Street, you get to know everyone even better because you are working closer to them on a regular basis, so it’s been really fun to see different stylists on different days and to click with them in a different way.”

What is something you like to do in your off time?
“When I’m not working and want to get out, I like to go to different shows around town. We regularly go to my friend’s venue Fresh Produce Records on MLK to hear bands play. They are opening a new record store on Second Street soon! Shout out to them! I also love to paint and be artistic when I need a little quiet time at home. I have designed album covers for friends as well as flyers for shows. I used to be the drummer in a band, so music and art is a big part of my life.

What is something that some people may not know about you?
“I am a HUGE Beatles fan. I’m obsessed with them. I basically believe that I belong in the 60s. I also used to do One Act Play and monologues in school! For me to naturally be kind of quiet, most people are surprised to know I did enjoy being on stage! It was easy because I got to play a role and be someone else for a little bit. That ties into being a hair stylist, too. I’ve always wanted to get out of my bubble and challenge myself, so deciding to go into hair was a way for me to push myself out of my natural, quiet comfort zone.”
