Terrace Talks: Mary

Hi Mary! Tell us a little about yourself:
“I am 32 years old, I have been a hair stylist for almost 9 years, and I have a wonderful, 1 year old daughter named Olivia. She is walking and climbing on EVERYTHING lately. That girl is fearless. Olivia is the best thing that ever happened to me. Motherhood is the most exhausting and rewarding thing that I have ever done.

What is your favorite thing about being in the cosmetology industry?
“I get to be creative every day. I feel very comfortable being ‘me’ in this industry. Technically speaking, I love everything, coloring and cutting. I had the opportunity to go to Los Angeles and see celebrity colorist Tracy Cunningham teach a color class and it really got my creative juices flowing. That class changed the thought process in my head regarding color and being a hairstylist, and I loved it. Cutting for me is like drawing with my shears. I like to do it all!”

What’s your favorite trend in hair right now?
“I love how all the decades are coming together. We are seeing a lot of the 90s, 80s, 70s looks coming back. Balayage and rooting is still big right now, color wise. So everything is being revisited, but with a modern twist.”

What made you decide to be a hair stylist?
“When I was a little girl, I loved fashion and doing my own hair. I would also give my stuffed animals haircuts. My hairdresser growing up was probably so annoyed with me because I would ask her so many questions when she would do my hair. She really pushed me to go to cosmetology school, even though originally I figured to have a successful career, I would have to go to a traditional college. But the more I spoke to other hair stylists, the more I realized it would be the best fit for me. And now that I am here, I only wish I had done it sooner.”

Tell us a little bit about your Signature life:
“I love the education we have here! This industry changes so fast and there is always something to learn. I really love our tracking systems as well because I want to be able to see where I am at and what I need to do to get better. Goal setting is exactly what a procrastinator like myself needs. Signature is my family and my home.”

What is something that you like to do in your off time?
“Playing with Olivia is my number one thing that I love to do during my off time. We listen to music or we go to the dog park with the pups. I have gotten into walking and hiking trails lately too. But I love to work, really. I really enjoy being in the salon, with my teammates and my guests.”
